LORD GARVAGH

The return of Lord Garvagh

We thought it was time for the lord to come “home” and have therefore honored father and son Garvagh a suite with tweed wallpaper, a private fireplace, and a beautiful view of the river, waterfall, mountains and fields.

“Old” Lord Garvagh and his entourage came sailing into the fjord in the beautiful wooden sailboat “Sunbeam” around 1850 and lived in the “Lord House” at Ohnstad, where he supposedly shot a pig that was squealing too loud on the other side of the river, out of pure irritation. But, that being said, the lord did always make up after himself. If we are to believe village history, it was not just wild animals, trout and salmon that the lord hunted when he stayed here at Tokvam. Bjørn´s great-great-grandmother was the sole heir to the farm and had to marry a man from the neighboring village in a hurry when she was with child - and the child was with certainty, just like Bjørn; of noble descent.

At least, that has been the unofficial explanation of why a steep and impassable piece of land, in the middle of the Tokvams property, was transferred to the farmers from the neighboring village - as dowry. Now, let us not say anything more about that case.

When the lords and the British upper class “discovered” the fjords, rivers and mountains at the end of the 18th and 19th centuries, most people thought that the earth was flat. The steep mountains with its towering peaks belonged to the realm of sin. Most Norwegians used the mountains for hunting and fishing, not recreation. Norwegians used the rivers to fish for food, not to “trick” the fish with cunning and lure them with a fly rod as the lords did.

In Aurland, the “Old” Lord had the “Lord House” built and there was a party every time they came to Aurland. In the mountain home between Aurland - Hol, stone huts were built and used during the reindeer hunt.

The “Old” Lords name was Charles Henry Spencer George Canning, and the son: Charles John Spencer George Canning. The “Young” Lord went with his father to Aurland as a fourteen-year-old and was dazzled by the mountains. When his father died a few years later, the “young” Lord continued to return to Aurland. The lords had a long-term lease on fishing grounds in Aurland and has left their mark on the village to this date.
